That squish band is a huge advantage of running 883 heads in a conversion.ġ200 heads of that generation in stock form will outperform 883 heads in stock form. Just be sure to do it in a way that maintains that 1/4" squish band around the perimeter. So for this combination, most people use a "conversion piston", which has a dish in the middle of it to reduce compression.Īlternatively, you can do things to the 883 heads to make the chambers bigger. That's because the 883 chamber is so small. However, if you use a stock flat top 1200 piston under a stock 883 head, your compression ratio will be up there, close to 12:1. This is a good thing, because when the piston comes in close proximity to it, you get a "squish band", which promotes chamber turbulence. Since the 883 heads have a 3" diameter chamber and the 1200 cylinders have a 3-1/2" diameter bore, the head deck overhangs the cylinder bore by 1/4" all the way around the perimeter. Not a workable thing to do at all.Ĩ83 heads can be used over 1200 cylinders, however. The chamber diameter is 1/2" bigger diameter than the bore, the valves would hit the cylinder deck, and the compression would be in the toilet. I'm not really understanding the question here, but I can give some general information.ġ200 heads cannot be used over 883 cylinders & pistons. So.what's best - what's the story on using 883 heads on 1200 jugs?Īppreciate any advice from people who know - better'n finding out the hard way! Thanks! I want to do the 883 to 1200 swap cheap and simple, and I expect the bobber build will be costly and at that point won't mind having some head work done.

Questions: 1) which set of heads should go where? The 1999 motor is going into a rigid frame streetbobber, with a hack for the dog. Later, I want to put aftermarket 1200 or 1250 cylinders onto the 1999 1200 engine. Both motors are stock and at about 11,000 miles, ie pretty fresh and stock bore.

I want to put the cylinders and pistons from the 1200 into the 883. I have two evo stock sporty engines, one's a 1999 1200cc sitting on a crate (and I have the pink slip for it), the other's a complete 2002 XL-C 883. I too need some advice.about 883 heads vs 1200 heads
